The Emmett Institute is dedicated to training the next generation of leaders by providing exceptional opportunities for education and hands-on experience in climate and environmental law and policy. Our graduates work at state and federal regulatory and enforcement agencies, national and local nonprofit advocacy groups, and leading law firms. 

Recognized as one of the country’s top environmental law programs, UCLA Law provides a robust and extensive curriculum for future lawyers seeking to work on environmental, energy, and natural resources issues. UCLA Law’s specialization in environmental law offers formal acknowledgement of their commitment to the field. 

In addition to doctrinal courses, the Emmett Institute supports two clinics that provide real-world learning opportunities. In the Frank G. Wells Environmental Law Clinic, students work on behalf of clients—often environmental and environmental justice nonprofits—on litigation and other advocacy matters. And in the California Environmental Legislation and Policy Clinic, students get a taste of the state lawmaking process, working with state legislators and staff on projects related to California’s environmental policy goals.  

Emmett Institute faculty offer extensive academic and career counseling to students pursuing environmental law at UCLA Law. The Institute also supports students with funding for summer externships and post-graduate fellowships. 

UCLA Law students engage with alumni in leading roles at state and federal agencies, nonprofits, and in private practice through events, career panels, and the California Lawyers Association Environmental Law Conference at Yosemite, an annual event for attorneys focused on environmental law. 

Students committed to environmental law also benefit from an active Environmental Law Society, which organizes UCLA participation in inter-school environmental moot court and negotiations competitions, informal events, panel discussions, hikes, and other activities.
