UCLA School of Law’s Veterans Legal Clinic and Criminal Justice Program partnered with the Oakland-based community organization Root & Rebound to hold a ticket-clearing clinic at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs West Los Angeles campus on Sept. 27, providing pro bono legal services for veterans.

For homeless veterans, traffic citations present barriers to services related to employment, housing and government benefits. Veterans clinic students under the supervision of faculty assisted 22 veterans with pro se motions and forms to clear standing warrants for failures to appear in court and similar matters, and drafted motions to seek reduction or waiver of fines and fees associated with traffic tickets.

UCLA Law students participate in the year-round Veterans Legal Clinic to help provide legal services, and also participate in the annual Stand Down event at the West Los Angeles VA.

Stan Hunter, lead teaching artist of the from the Prison Arts Collective, led a reflection-and-art workshop alongside the legal clinic as part of the ongoing Connecting Art and Law for Liberation effort involving UCLA Law and several collaborators.
